Sustainable Food
We are planning several exciting food-related projects as part of our aim to help local residents take practical action to reduce their carbon emissions and create more sustainable lifestyles.
Why food?
Potential impact
Upwards of 14% of the UK’s overall CO2 emissions are attributable to food (growing, processing, packaging, transporting, preserving, cooking and disposing).
Cutting our food bills
The more food we grow and source locally, and the less food we waste, and the less carbon we emit – saving us money too.
It’s fun & tastes great!
Everyone loves food, and we hope our shared passion will help bring families and neighbours together. And the rewards go beyond CO2 reduction when we benefit from fresher, tastier and more nutritious plates of food.
So what are we thinking of?
Growing
Sharing tools, seedlings and gardening tips to get as many people growing their own produce as possible, even if it starts with a single tub of lettuce outside your backdoor.
Shopping
We’re not going to change this overnight, but we’ll be trying to identify, promote and make accessible the best local food. We hope that by calculating carbon savings but also providing tastier, good value, community-sustaining produce, local residents can lead the way in rethinking how we buy our food.
These are just a couple of tasters and with members’ input and expertise we hope that food-related projects will become one of our key areas in reducing carbon emissions in our area.
To help us decide which projects would suit the North Oxford community best, one of our food group members, Emma Burnett, has designed a sustainable food survey. Please do fill it in – it’s only 5 questions, and we’ll be using your great ideas!
