On 16 November, Brenda Boardman (LCON committee member) gave a talk at the Neighbourhood Forum AGM on how we can deliver a low-carbon future in our area (the wards of Summertown and St Margaret’s). The commitments that the UK has given on climate change, together with the carbon-reduction target of Oxford City council (-3% pa), means that over the period 2017-2032, we all have to halve the carbon emissions from our use of energy in the home. This is a really big challenge.
The best way to start is to know how much energy you are using at the moment, what size your home is (in m2), and to get an energy performance certificate. Then start planning how you will make the necessary improvements. That will get you on the right trajectory. At the same time, make sure that all the electrical equipment in your home is super-energy-efficient, that you have 100% light emitting diodes (LEDs) and that your electricity bills are going down by at least 3% pa as well. As Lord Stern has said, the next two decades are probably the most important ever for the planet. And we have the sobering knowledge that we are the first generation to understand the problem of climate change and to know how to reduce the threat.
